Beauty is the European translation of a Native American term. Since the Native American Languages are far removed from Europe physically, they are also far removed linguistically and conceptually as well.
Beauty to the European mindset refers mostly to physical pleasance, or what pleases the eye. Over the last many decades it is starting to be used as reference to an internal quality.
Beauty, to the Native American way of thinking, isn’t so mundane. It is actually a way of life. It is a way of feeling connected to this world. It is also a statement on how they view the world and their place in it.
Nizhoni is the Navaho word for Beauty. Each individual tribe has their own word for it, but they all express the same concept.
But what does it mean?
First and foremost, remember that it is a way of life.
What it means is to be a part of this world, to appreciate the many diverse forms of life, to give thanks for all that we are given, to walk bravely and not fearfully through life, do no harm to our mother the Earth so that all those who come after will be able to experience the Beauty that we have. Be at peace. Know that you are part of a larger picture and not the end all. Take no more than you need and you will have all that you truly want.
