October 2011

If I were to run for president, I could do it very smart and target and win the minimum number of states required to win. This morning I sat down and actually figured it out. A Presidential Candidate needs to only win 11 states. 11! Can you imagine that?

Now, some states allow the electoral votes they can cast to be split between the candidates and every ten years or so when the census is taken this list may change slightly. This is from the 2008 Presidential election.

The list and the breakdown in descending order of electoral votes:

  1. 55 California
  2. 34 Texas
  3. 31 New York
  4. 27 Florida
  5. 21 Pennsylvania
  6. 21 Illinois
  7. 20 Ohio
  8. 17 Michigan
  9. 15 New Jersey
  10. 15 North Carolina
  11. 15 Georgia

These 11 states represent 271 electoral votes. In other words 20% of the states wield half the electoral votes.

Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, which have gotten a lot of attention in the last few Presidential Elections, represent about 1/4 of the Electoral Votes required for a person to become president.

I am not going to run for office. I am just saying. (In Washington Speak that means I might.)

While playing around on twitter.com I came across a video that explains in plain english how the U.S. process for electing the President works.

How the Electoral System Works (on YouTube)

There is only one thing they left out – that some states split the electoral vote (if it isn’t a landslide.)

Thank you CommonCraft.com

On C-Span one morning before the 2008 election I heard that according to a Zogby poll Barak Obama had a six point lead over John McCain and is approaching 50% of likely voters.

Six percent is almost meaningless, statistically speaking that is. All it would take is a couple of million registered voters to suddenly be ineligible or unable to vote to shift the election into John McCains’ favor.

How could someone become ineligible to vote? What would it take for a person to suddenly become ineligible or unable to vote?

To be unable to vote would mean that for some reason they were not able to cast their vote by the time the polls closed and may include any of the following:

  • This could be due to them not being able to get to the polling station or
  • the lines at the polling station were so long that they couldn’t get in to vote or
  • they were challenged or
  • they were stricken from the eligible voters list for some reason or
  • that they didn’t use their name as it appeared on the eligible voter list or
  • their address didn’t match or
  • their name was close to the name of a known felon or
  • their name isn’t on the list or
  • they were told that the date of the election had changed (which it doesn’t)

What is going on today in the “worlds greatest democracy” is a shame, and a horror. The Republican Party many years ago was involved in a court case about what is known as “caging.” This is a process whereby they supposedly sent out voter inquiry cards – which by law cannot be forwarded – and any that were returned had the persons name removed from the rolls. They lost the case and were enjoined not to do it again.

Well, they did it again in 2004. Nothing was done except outrage by the citizens and a brief inquiry.

It is quite possible that they have upped the ante to election fraud (also known as “rigging the election“.) You see, voter fraud, although serious, would be minor as it involves only individual people. Election fraud would take an organization to accomplish. There are far more people registered as Democrats than as Republicans and if all the Democrats turned out to vote very few republicans would be elected. It’s a numbers thing.

Now that there have been hundreds of thousands of people are losing their homes the last thing on their mind is to update their voter registration records. These people are in jeopardy of losing their right, and duty, to vote in any presidential election (if they haven’t already) due to shady tactics like caging.

There are many organizations out there trying to get people registered to vote such as Rock The Vote, Why Tuesday?, Student PIRGs, Declare Yourself, Head Count and many others.

ACORN, another organization that registers people to vote, is being vilified in recent years by the Republican Party. Besides registering people to vote they also look for voter fraud and election fraud. Go figure.

Another way for a person to have problems voting is if their name wasn’t on the polling list.

According to Greg Palast in some investigative work for Rolling Stone has found that Colorado had quietly purged 20% of the people from the voter records. John McCain stopped campaigning in Colorado.

I am not liking this at all. I would call this October surprise #2 (#1 is the tanking economy.)

A study published October 11, 2011 by the online journal PLoS ONE reports that genetically engineered canola endowed with herbicide resistance have been found growing outside of established cultivation regions along roadsides across North Dakota. These “escaped” plants were found state-wide and accounted for 45% of the total roadside plants sampled.

The authors of the study also found that the escaped plants could hybridize with each other to create novel combinations of transgenic traits. In the study they conducted a systematic roadside survey of canola (Brassica napus) populations growing outside of cultivation in North Dakota, USA, the dominant canola growing region in the U.S.

Lead researcher Cynthia Sagers said, “More than half of the earth’s terrestrial landscape is managed in cultivated crops or forage species, yet we have little understanding of how domesticated plants influence their wild relatives.”

Regular crops also spread unnatural genes around

It should be noted that non-GM crops (conventional and organic) contain traits bred into them – which are often found and selected by irradiating seeds or exposing them to synthetic chemicals to create thousands of random genetic mutations – that can also spread to wild plants.

The authors argue that their result, more than 10 years after the initial release of genetically engineered canola, “raises questions of whether adequate oversight and monitoring protocols are in place in the U.S. to track the environmental impact of biotech products.”

A Costly Prime Example of How Easily GM Plant Genes Spread

Percy Schmeiser, a farmer in Bruno, Saskatchewan Canada whose Canola fields were contaminated with Monsanto’s Round-Up Ready (GM) Canola. Percy’s canola fields (which have been grown for decades by using seed he and his family saved year-after-year, long before Monsanto began producing GM seeds/crops) became contaminated from neighboring farms growing Monsanto’s GM canola.

Monsanto’s position was that it didn’t matter whether Schmeiser knew or not that his canola field was contaminated with the Monsanto Roundup Ready gene, or whether or not he took advantage of the technology; that he must pay Monsanto their Technology Fee of $15./acre.

Percy spent years in court with Monsanto and underwent enormous legal expenses exceeding $400,000!

Eventually the courts ruled in Percy’s favor – need I say – YAY!!!

Monsanto has agreed to pay all the clean-up costs of the Roundup Ready canola that contaminated Percy’s fields. Also part of the agreement was that there was no gag-order on the settlement and that Monsanto could be sued again if further contamination occurred. Schmeiser believes this precedent setting agreement ensures that farmers will be entitled to reimbursement when their fields become contaminated with unwanted Roundup Ready canola or any other unwanted GMO plants.

Percy’s story is told on DVD, Percy Schmeiser – David versus Monsanto a film by Bertram Verhag… Imagine that a storm blows across your garden – and that now, without your knowledge and without your consent, foreign and genetically-manipulated seeds are in your vegetable patch which you have nourished and maintained for many years. A few days later, representatives of a multi-national corporate group [Monsanto] pay you a visit at home, demand that you surrender your vegetables and file a criminal complaint against you requesting a fine a $20,000 USD against you – for the illegal use of patented and genetically-manipulated seeds.

In my SEO & Web Marketing series of articles I outlined many things to take into consideration when designing your web pages and websites. One thing about website design that I haven’t covered yet is the underlying server software that is used (if any), such as PHP or Lasso or ASP, to assemble your web page before it is sent from the server to the browser. I’ll be covering that in an upcoming article.

In this article I will be discussing why it is important to think down the road and make a plan. One thing you have to remember is be flexible as time goes on as your website may take another path than you had intended.

I have this client who wanted a web page put up, yesterday. We all know someone like that. We discussed what they wanted to do with the site and where they wanted it to go. The monkey wrench was that it had to be done yesterday. So, to please this client I opted out of doing any programming and put up the page (which is all they wanted at the time) using straight HTML and CSS.

They recently came to me and said they want this page with this information and that page with that information and so on with more pages coming down the road. If you have never done a website – maintenance on two or thee html pages is nothing. When you get to ten or more with new pages being added it gets to be a problem if you have only them in html because you have to update menus on ten or more pages.

When I was in boot camp, my C.O. had this saying – “Prior Positive Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.” Benjamin Franklin is reputed to have said “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four sharpening the axe.” That should be fairly self explanatory, but if it isn’t allow me to elucidate: Take the time now to review my Web Marketing series and get a road map.

Now back to my story.

I knew that I would need to do some programming on this site – if nothing else, to make it easier for upkeep. Yet I listened to my client and put it up quick. If I had stuck to my guns a little more – or did the programming off the clock – it would have been a snap to update. As it stands now, I will have to recreate the page as a template and create the new pages and update the index page. Added time for me (has pluses and minus’) and added – unnecessary –  expense for my client.

So learn vicariously on this one and it could save you a lot of headaches in the future.
