Shoals Creek EcovillageIt seems as time progresses that an ever increasing number of people are starting to stand up and say “I want to live in a real community!” However, what defines community is somewhat elusive and can be highly variable. The definition of community depends upon the individual, family, or even a group of people.

For some it is just reaching out to and interacting more with their neighbors while others are leaving the cities and joining like minded people to start a whole new village – eschewing what they consider the oppressiveness, the high crime rates to find or build something better. They all want something better for the future. A place where kids can run free and have fun without their parents having to worry.

Toni Morrison was quoted in Essence, July 1981: “I don’t think one parent can raise a child. I don’t think two parents can raise a child. You really need the whole village.”

Two incidents recently came to mind about parenting and children. Once was the police were called, several times, on a mother because she wasn’t close enough to her children who were riding bikes in the cul-de-sac where they lived, while the mother was sitting in a lawn chair in the front yard watching them. The second involved a mother who was actually arrested because she was in the house and her children were playing in the mothers front yard.

When I was young I was like most children in that you respected your parents (even if you pushed the boundaries). You played in the front yard, the back yard, the neighbors yard – but you didn’t dare cross the street unless mom & pop said you were old enough and responsible enough to do so safely and that very act opened up a whole new world to explore while getting bumps, bruises and dirty! Then, when you were old enough to ride your bike without supervision the world was yours for the taking.

The world was decidedly different back then as every adult in your neighborhood kept an eye on you – not spying mind you. Just an eye on you if anything should happen that you needed help.

People are looking to return to those days, at the very least for safety and freedom. The freedom to not have the police called on you because your child was in your front yard and you were inside.

Reflecting back, I guess I could feel the changes that were happening. As I got older and would very often be out on 40+ mile solo bike rides by myself it seems that people were drawing in more to themselves and “hiding” in their homes. Interaction between neighbors was declining. Fewer gatherings – parties, celebrations and such. It has now reached a point where people have become fearful, distrustful and unthinking as they are starting to impose their values, morals and beliefs on others.

In the 1970′s, growing out of the short lived commune movement, a new way of thinking began to emerge. It really wasn’t new as it was how our many generations back ancestors tended to live. By gathering into small communities for safety and for the good of everyone by trading goods and services. Now 40 years out, this idea is once again starting to take root, sprouting from seeds planted long ago.

These communities were pretty self sufficient having most of the goods and services they needed right there, but trading with other villages when something was not immediately available. Economics was not a problem. If one village had collapsed it did not, as a general rule, cause surrounding villages to collapse, but then again, back then there really wasn’t anything called an economy that ran by complex rules. There was no “globalization”.

Evelyn and I are working with a couple of other folks to develop a new community, Shoals Creek Village, around the simple concept of a hyper local economy, but doing it in a way that we will be able to use it as a model for creating and building out other communities under the umbrella of My Eco Oasis. We are involved because we believe all communities could be better and feel that this project will help show the way for them to explore ways, both old and new, to make themselves better, safer and healthier for their citizens.

We are looking for people to help us, in whatever way they feel drawn, to pitch in. Soon we will be calling on people, artisans, agrarians and others to come and live at this new wonderful community. In the meantime join us on Facebook at Shoals Village and My Eco Oasis if the the idea of joining or creating a community appeals to you.

Tuberculosis BacteriumTotally Drug Resistant Tuberculosis was first encountered in two cases in Italy in 2003. Fifteen cases were observed in 2009 in Iran. Twelve cases have been discovered in India in 2011.

Totally Drug Resistant, known as TDR, is when a disease is resistant to all prescribed medications. In this case it, TDR-TB, is resistant to all three front line medications and all nine second line drugs.

Drug resistant disease is not a new phenomenon and was first indicated in the Luria–Delbrück experiment of 1943. Drug resistance has been building since drugs have been used to treat disease.

In recent years we have seen MRSA, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, has emerged. Methicillin was the last hope of “conventional” western pharmacology.

Some of the foremost medications for Tuberculosis include:

  • Isoniazid – this is the current first line drug of choice for controlling tuberculosis. It is used on its own for the control of latent tuberculosis and in combination with other drugs for active TB.
  • Rifampicin - is a much more complicated molecule, used in conjunction with isoniazid for active TB.
  • Pyrazinamide - is also used for the control of active TB.
  • Ethambutol - specifically inhibits the synthesis of arabinan in cell walls.
  • Streptomycin - was the first antibiotic remedy for tuberculosis, but is not used for that purpose nowadays.

Diseases such as TB, bird flu, swine flu and Staph Aureus have been with us for a very long time with very long times between mutations that inhibit our ability to deal with them. It seems however, with the advent of the new “Patent” medicines the mutations seem to be coming much faster.

The TB bacteria, it has been learned, can communicate drug resistance to other TB bacteria without waiting to multiply know as horizontal gene transfer.

The authorities do not feel this is a problem. I see it as one. For thousands of years we had more or less been able to deal with disease with what we had available from nature. Sometimes there would a very virulent mutation that we were not prepared for and cause massive death an epidemic or a pandemic.

This kind of discovery, TDR-TB, confirms what I have believed for a long time – Nature loves and seeks balance. I don’t mean it has to be 50-50. When there is an imbalance nature will find a way to restore it.

All-Clad LogoAll-Clad Metalcrafters, of Canonsburg, PA, believes in environmental responsibility and givingback to the community. That’s why they have created Cookshare, a recycling program that rewards you for donating your old cookware to charity. As a gift for your donation they will send you a copy of the “Ad Hoc at Home’ cook book by acclaimed chef Thomas Keller (a $50 value). Just follow the following three steps:

  1. Purchase All-Clads’ new d5 Stainless Steel cookware totaling $500 or more in one purchase.
  2. Donate any amount of your old cookware to the charity of your choice.
  3. Send All-Clad a copy of your d5 Stainless Steel proof of purchase, a copy of the receipt for your charitable donation and the Cookshare redemption form found online at any of Williams-Sonoma All-Clad d5 product pages such as All-Clad d5 Stainless-Steel French Skillets.

I just came across this offer, which started in 2009, and it ends Jan 31, 2012. so, if you want to take advantage of this offer you will need to hurry.

I have used cheap aluminum, expensive aluminum, teflon coated, uncoated, cast iron cookware from many different manufacturers. I have fallen in love with cast iron cookware from Staub and stainless steel cookware from All-Clad. The feel great, look great and work great. If you want to upgrade to one of the best cookware companies on the market this could well be the time, but hurry as time is running out!

All-Clad uses several layers of steel and aluminum (or copper in their copper lines) to better distribute heat and make cooking more efficient by needing lower temperatures when cooking. All thumbs up on this for me!

A friend of mine at the Asheville Williams-Sonoma gave me idea for this Thanksgiving Turkey Leftover recipe for turkey pesto pasta. He told me that he tried turkey and pesto on a croissant. I tried it on a croissant and thought it was OK, then i tried it on a crostini thought it was much better. After a few days this recipe hit me.

Ingredients:

  • 10 oz. left over turkey crumbs
  • 1 lb. Penne Rigate Pasta
  • 8 oz. Pesto (Williams-Sonoma has a great Pesto but is only available through their brick and mortar stores)
  • 8 oz. Cherry Tomatoes

Directions:

Cook pasta as directed on package.

While the pasta is cooking make sure the turkey is in small pieces and cut the tomatoes into quarters.

When the pasta is done, drain it and return it to the cooking pot. Mix in the pesto.

Spoon the pasta and pesto into dishes or bowls, sprinkle on the turkey and tomatoes.

Serves 2 to 4 (depending upon what else you are serving with it)

As I was watching the 2008 election results I decided to do some research into which presidential candidate won which of the eleven “key states” (read my previous article) and went on to become, or remain, president. Due to all the traffic on the internet, especially some of the more politically oriented sites, it was slow going and I managed to get as far back as President Eisenhower.

I have done a spreadsheet showing the presidents, which of the eleven states they won along with the % of the popular vote along with a simple calculation to see if I could see a relation between popular vote, electoral vote and the number of key states. (my spreadsheet covers back until just before Hawaii became a state – this is an excel spreadsheet, if you don’t have excel you can download OpenOffice for free). To my surprise this calculation made it easy to see squeekers, minor and full landslides!

I stopped at Eisenhower because it starts to get a little more complicated with states disappearing along with changes in the number of electoral votes as you go back in time. If anyone wants to take it further to see if my theory holds up – go for it! Please let me know the results. Just make sure you adjust the key states with the changes in the electoral votes.

I obtained the voting stats from Dave Leip’s “Atlas of U.S. Presidential ElectionsKey-State-Theory.”

My “Key State” theory is as follows: in order to become President all you have to do is win half , or six, of the eleven states that comprise 270 of the electoral votes and the rest of the electoral votes will come from other states.

My “Key State” theory has held up with two presidential election exceptions. Those two exceptions were President George Bushes two terms (he won the same 5 key states both times). But as far as most people are concerned he is an anomaly anyway you look at it.

His two elections are looked upon with great suspicion and were narrow margins in both the electoral vote and the popular vote – not a mandate as the Republicans would leave you to believe.

  • President Obama had a minor landslide.
  • President Bush 2 had narrow margins.
  • President Clinton had narrow margins.
  • President Bush also won with a minor landslide.
  • President Reagan won both elections with a landslide.
  • President Carter had narrow margins.
  • President Nixon had a narrow margin and a landslide.
  • President Johnson a minor landslide.
  • President Kennedy had a narrow margin.
  • President Eisenhower had a minor landslide.

However, they all won at least 8 of the “key states” with the exception of President Bush who only won 5 in each of the two elections.

If I were to run for president, I could do it very smart and target and win the minimum number of states required to win. This morning I sat down and actually figured it out. A Presidential Candidate needs to only win 11 states. 11! Can you imagine that?

Now, some states allow the electoral votes they can cast to be split between the candidates and every ten years or so when the census is taken this list may change slightly. This is from the 2008 Presidential election.

The list and the breakdown in descending order of electoral votes:

  1. 55 California
  2. 34 Texas
  3. 31 New York
  4. 27 Florida
  5. 21 Pennsylvania
  6. 21 Illinois
  7. 20 Ohio
  8. 17 Michigan
  9. 15 New Jersey
  10. 15 North Carolina
  11. 15 Georgia

These 11 states represent 271 electoral votes. In other words 20% of the states wield half the electoral votes.

Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, which have gotten a lot of attention in the last few Presidential Elections, represent about 1/4 of the Electoral Votes required for a person to become president.

I am not going to run for office. I am just saying. (In Washington Speak that means I might.)

While playing around on twitter.com I came across a video that explains in plain english how the U.S. process for electing the President works.

How the Electoral System Works (on YouTube)

There is only one thing they left out – that some states split the electoral vote (if it isn’t a landslide.)

Thank you CommonCraft.com

On C-Span one morning before the 2008 election I heard that according to a Zogby poll Barak Obama had a six point lead over John McCain and is approaching 50% of likely voters.

Six percent is almost meaningless, statistically speaking that is. All it would take is a couple of million registered voters to suddenly be ineligible or unable to vote to shift the election into John McCains’ favor.

How could someone become ineligible to vote? What would it take for a person to suddenly become ineligible or unable to vote?

To be unable to vote would mean that for some reason they were not able to cast their vote by the time the polls closed and may include any of the following:

  • This could be due to them not being able to get to the polling station or
  • the lines at the polling station were so long that they couldn’t get in to vote or
  • they were challenged or
  • they were stricken from the eligible voters list for some reason or
  • that they didn’t use their name as it appeared on the eligible voter list or
  • their address didn’t match or
  • their name was close to the name of a known felon or
  • their name isn’t on the list or
  • they were told that the date of the election had changed (which it doesn’t)

What is going on today in the “worlds greatest democracy” is a shame, and a horror. The Republican Party many years ago was involved in a court case about what is known as “caging.” This is a process whereby they supposedly sent out voter inquiry cards – which by law cannot be forwarded – and any that were returned had the persons name removed from the rolls. They lost the case and were enjoined not to do it again.

Well, they did it again in 2004. Nothing was done except outrage by the citizens and a brief inquiry.

It is quite possible that they have upped the ante to election fraud (also known as “rigging the election“.) You see, voter fraud, although serious, would be minor as it involves only individual people. Election fraud would take an organization to accomplish. There are far more people registered as Democrats than as Republicans and if all the Democrats turned out to vote very few republicans would be elected. It’s a numbers thing.

Now that there have been hundreds of thousands of people are losing their homes the last thing on their mind is to update their voter registration records. These people are in jeopardy of losing their right, and duty, to vote in any presidential election (if they haven’t already) due to shady tactics like caging.

There are many organizations out there trying to get people registered to vote such as Rock The Vote, Why Tuesday?, Student PIRGs, Declare Yourself, Head Count and many others.

ACORN, another organization that registers people to vote, is being vilified in recent years by the Republican Party. Besides registering people to vote they also look for voter fraud and election fraud. Go figure.

Another way for a person to have problems voting is if their name wasn’t on the polling list.

According to Greg Palast in some investigative work for Rolling Stone has found that Colorado had quietly purged 20% of the people from the voter records. John McCain stopped campaigning in Colorado.

I am not liking this at all. I would call this October surprise #2 (#1 is the tanking economy.)

In my SEO & Web Marketing series of articles I outlined many things to take into consideration when designing your web pages and websites. One thing about website design that I haven’t covered yet is the underlying server software that is used (if any), such as PHP or Lasso or ASP, to assemble your web page before it is sent from the server to the browser. I’ll be covering that in an upcoming article.

In this article I will be discussing why it is important to think down the road and make a plan. One thing you have to remember is be flexible as time goes on as your website may take another path than you had intended.

I have this client who wanted a web page put up, yesterday. We all know someone like that. We discussed what they wanted to do with the site and where they wanted it to go. The monkey wrench was that it had to be done yesterday. So, to please this client I opted out of doing any programming and put up the page (which is all they wanted at the time) using straight HTML and CSS.

They recently came to me and said they want this page with this information and that page with that information and so on with more pages coming down the road. If you have never done a website – maintenance on two or thee html pages is nothing. When you get to ten or more with new pages being added it gets to be a problem if you have only them in html because you have to update menus on ten or more pages.

When I was in boot camp, my C.O. had this saying – “Prior Positive Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.” Benjamin Franklin is reputed to have said “If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four sharpening the axe.” That should be fairly self explanatory, but if it isn’t allow me to elucidate: Take the time now to review my Web Marketing series and get a road map.

Now back to my story.

I knew that I would need to do some programming on this site – if nothing else, to make it easier for upkeep. Yet I listened to my client and put it up quick. If I had stuck to my guns a little more – or did the programming off the clock – it would have been a snap to update. As it stands now, I will have to recreate the page as a template and create the new pages and update the index page. Added time for me (has pluses and minus’) and added – unnecessary –  expense for my client.

So learn vicariously on this one and it could save you a lot of headaches in the future.

Offline Marketing

Back in the mid 1990′s, I read a book by Jay Conrad Levinson called “Guerilla Marketing.” It was and still is a fascinating read. After reading the book I got a client needing help with their internet presence which included stabilizing the web server (it was really flaky) and marketing. I thought fantastic! I could really put Jays’ advice to the test as the company was only about 9 months old and grossing only $20,000 in that first year with 6 employees.

After 6 months the owner was looking to do an IPO (initial public offering – stock market terminology) and 6 months after my contract expired they netted $2 million. A couple of years later they were purchased by another company.

I did this using a combination of traditional advertising and the concepts in the “Guerilla Marketing” book. Since the book was written he has penned many other books to help the aspiring entrepreneur achieve their goals.

Often overlooked by website owners, off-line marketing can provide a big boost to your site’s activity. The object of marketing is to keep your business, product or service in front of the public. There are many ways to market your web site off-line. Some of these are free, some are inexpensive and some require a fair-sized expenditure.

Standard Fare

If you are a business, you will need all the basics: letterhead, envelopes, business cards, printed business forms, etc. If you only have a personal page, you might consider “business” cards at the very least.

Business cards are really inexpensive so buy a lot and pass them out. Put them up on community bulletin boards. Visit book stores and insert them into magazines and books relating to the topic of your site (you didn\’t hear that here, OK?) Leave them on bus seats or your table when you go out to eat.

You should also consider flyers, brochures and mailers. You can create and produce these yourself. However, having them professionally done is usually worth the extra expense, but not always. Consult your business plan/road map to see if that is the way you want to go.

Pass these items out or mail them to anyone who shows an interest in what you are doing. In future contacts with these people, give them additional copies to pass along if they don\’t need them anymore.

In your emails make sure you have a link to your site in your signature.

Organizations

There are many organizations available that you can use to get the word out. You may want to consider your local Chamber of Commerce (CoC) or Merchant Association, professional and trade organizations, guilds and so forth. There is usually a list of these organizations in your phone book or at your local library. These groups are often looking for information that might be of interest to their members. Be aware that they may charge a fee or ask for a donation or sponsorship. You may want to consider joining some of these organizations.

Use these organizations for “networking.” The people you meet may pass your information on to others who may be interested. You better your chances of making “qualified” contacts the more people you meet. Keep a contact file of these people and make notes to refer to later.

Traditional Media and Sponsorships

Never leave out the local media (newspapers, radio, television). They are always looking for items of local interest. Write a press release, find out whom to send it to and get it to them! Some media may be willing to work a deal exchanging advertising.

Sponsoring local events is another way to get media coverage for your business. Look at what is happening in your area. Track down who the main contact is and ask them how to become a sponsor.

Consider becoming a contributing “writer” for a local newspaper, magazine or radio station. If you manage to become a contributor, tell your friends and family and have them help spread the word.

Consider advertising in conjunction with other businesses (split the cost). This is often called co-op advertising.

You can also use direct mail (junk mail; don’t sigh as this is highly effective), coupon mailers and response card packs as well. They typically yield a 1-2% response rate which is just about average for advertising in general.

Friends, Family and Co-Workers

Other sources often overlooked are friends, family and co-workers. Ask them to put some of your business cards in their wallet or purse to pass on to their friends. Ask them to also talk about your website every chance they get (but make sure they don’t try to “hype” your site.)

Basically what you need to do is build your “street cred,” also known as credibility. This actually applies to offline as well as online marketing.
