Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) essential oil is one of the most versatile essential oil to have on hand. Therapeutic Lavender oil is known to promote tissue regeneration and speed wound healing and is one of the few essential oils to still be listed in the British Pharmacopoeia (that is, provided the Lavender oil is of therapeutic quality).

Lavender has medical properties as well: highly antiseptic, antifungal, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, combats excess sebum on skin, and is used for respiratory infections,  menstrual problems/PMS, skin conditions (perinial repair, acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring), burns, hair loss, insomnia, nervous tension.

The fragrant influence of Lavender oil is calming, relaxing, and balancing, both physically and emotionally.

  • University researchers in Japan found that diffusing certain aromas in an office environment dramatically improved mental accuracy and concentration. Diffused lemon oil resulted in 54 percent fewer errors, jasmine 33 percent fewer errors, and lavender 20 percent fewer errors. When aromas were diffused during test taking, scores increased by as much as 50 percent.
  • Lavender has been documented to improve concentration and mental acuity. University of Miami researchers found that inhalation of lavender oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation.
  • Lavender oil also reduced depression and improved cognitive performance (Diego et al., 1998).
  • A 2001 Osaka Kyoiku University study found that lavender reduced mental stress and increased alertness (Motomura et al., 2001).

Bed Bugs Be Gone! That’s what many say when using superior quality essential oils to prevent and get rid of bed bugs. I have no personal experience in getting rid of bed bugs but I think that’s because I use and diffuse my essential oils often. Purification essential oil blend

Unlike chemical sprays, unadulterated and undiluted essential oils are not toxic to us and the environment. This type of essential oil does not get rid of insect pests through smell alone but rather by the essential oil disrupting the waxy coating found on many species of insects bodies. The essential oils work by coating on their waxy exoskeleton which causes the insect to loose water from their body and become dehydrated and die.

As for eggs and larvae, the essential oils simply kill them if they’re present. I personally have found my Young Living essential oils to be extremely effective against insect pests in both my garden and home. They are not your typical aromatherapy oils found in stores.

Here are two ways we use the Young Living essential oil blend Purification (#3399) to prevent bed bugs from ruining our lives and what others have done to get rid of nasty bed bugs:

1. Diffusing Purification Essential Oil Blend for Bed Bugs

Diffusing with Young Living’s Essential Oil Diffuser (#3764)(cold-air / nebulizer type) or with the TheraPro Diffuser (#4495) is an all-natural way to help get rid of those nasty bed bugs. See both types of diffusers here.

How to Diffuse to Get Rid Bed Bugs

During the day, while you’re at work, turn on and fill your diffuser with Purification essential oil blend using the highest diffusing setting. Allow the diffuser run all day. Do this every day until the bed bugs are gone.

The TheraPro Diffuser produces a micro-fine essential oil mist in the air which slowly settles and makes contact with the bed bugs. Like most insects, bed bugs have a waxy coating on their body and the essential oils break down that waxy coating. Shortly after that the bed bug will die of dehydration; so you’ll want to do some thorough vacuuming often, here is more information preventing bed bugs and getting things under control.

Added Benefits: Diffusing Purification oil can also prevent and eliminate mold and kill micro-organisms that cause colds and flu.

Caution: Do NOT leave pets in the room when a diffuser is running all day; too much of even a good thing can be overkill for those we cherish!

2. Purification Bed Bug Sachets for Under Your Mattress

These little sachets are placed between your mattress and box-spring. Here’s how to make them…

  • Cut 8 – 4″x4″ squares of gauze type fabric and sew each square on 3 sides.
  • Take 2 cotton balls and sprinkle each with several drops of Purification essential oil blend.
  • Place 2 cotton balls in each sachet and sew up the open side of fabric.
  • Place each sachet between your mattress and box-spring, spending them out in a grid layout.
  • Refresh cotton balls every 1-2 months with Purification.

You can buy Purification and the TheraPro Diffuser at my Young Living website.

While it’s nearly impossible to affect the majority of environmental toxins found in our air, water, and food supply, it’s easy to control what we bring into our homes. Unfortunately, many of our homes are just as polluted as the outdoors. Yet by recognizing the potential problems and making lifestyle changes that address them, you can create a safe, nontoxic haven in your home.

Believe it or not, indoor air can be even more polluted than outdoor air, even in the largest industrialized cities. This is very important to recognize because we spend as much as 90% of our time indoors.

Indoor air is dangerous for two primary reasons: pollutants and poor ventilation. Indoor air pollution can come from home heating and cooling systems, tobacco and cigarette smoke, building material outgassing, asbestos, mold from water damage, furniture made from processed woods, household cleaners, personal care products, and air fresheners, as well as from outdoor sources, that can become trapped indoors. Many times the air is not significantly affected by many one of these sources, but when multiple sources are added together, their individual affects can be multiplied and we can become sick.

About Air Purifiers

  • Ozone air purifiers: These release ozone into the air to remove chemical fumes, odors, and bacteria. They are not effective for removing particles or allergens from the air, and they are not safe to run while you are in the room because ozone gas can be toxic. If you use this type of purifier, turn it off about two hours before reentering the room.
  • Carbon air purifiers: These use activated carbon as an air filter. The carbon is able to remove odors and capture smaller particles than HEPA filters, but the carbon needs to be replaced regularly, which can be messy.
  • Ionic air purifiers: these work by negatively charging air particles, which then attract positively charged pollutants. When the two combine, dust is created. An unwanted side effect reported with ionizers is that they can produce ozone, so they are best turned off when people or pets are in the room.
  • Other air-purifying features can include an ultraviolet light to kill airborne bacteria, and some air purifiers come with a combination of functions to enhance their air-cleaning ability.
  • The E.L Foust Company has made air purifiers since 1974, its designs are created for people with environmental illnesses, allergies, or asthma.

Household Cleaning

Detergents, cleaning solvents, and indoor fragrances sound like good ideas because marketers have worked long and hard to get you interested in buying them. But the bottom line is that many are quite toxic and can affect your health. Besides being loaded with chemicals, many household cleaners are labeled as “antibacterial,” which is just a sugar-coated term for describing the active ingredient, pesticides. I’ve even found that many of the all-natural and natural cleaners containing essential oils are full of chemicals too; why? Because, they say, the consumer demands that their product be inexpensive and so they use cheap ingredients to make them. I personally have found that the natural cleaning products simply require too much product to be used to get the job done, or they’re not terribly effective. It was these two reasons 30 years ago that I set out on my quest to find better solutions.

The other day I reached for something and accidentally caught my thumb on the tip of a screw sticking out of a piece of wood. It hurt, as one would expect and bled a little. I wiped it off and went about my day as a kind of experiment… to see if my doing nothing would allow it to heal or become infected. I pretty well knew it would start to get infected because my hands were dirty at the time. The next morning, my thumb was sore, pink and a pinch swollen.

The Part of My Experiment with Essential Oils

First I tried my Lavender essential oil, pouring 2 drops on the location. In the past, I’ve used Lavender for cleaning scraps and small wounds but did so immediately after the injury occurred and the results were great. This time I wanted to see ‘if’ using Lavender after an infection started to show up if it would clear it up. Continue reading “Thieves Essential Oil to Prevent Infections” »

This easy facial scrub recipe is luxurious and livens up dry, dull indoor wintertime skin. As a facial scrub I think it’s important to use a fine sugar as the larger granule sugars could be too harsh for more delicate facial skin.Jasmine essential oil

Cranberry Sugar Facial Scrub

You will need:

1 cup fresh cranberries
1 1/2 cups organic sugar
1/2 cup sweet almond oil
1 scraped and finely chopped vanilla bean
5-6 drops jasmine essential oil
3 drops rose essential oil

Directions:

Crush cranberries in food processor until fine; add sweet almond oil, vanilla infusion and pour into large bowl and add sugar, mix well and put into jars.  Put into an air tight container and use while showering.  Perfect for gift giving!

Tip: I personally use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils, they are pure and unadulterated and produce very nice skin rejuvenating results. I also happen to be a YL distributor because I believe in their oils so much.
